Zambales: Puerto del Mar

Puerto del Mar in Bgy. Uacon, Candelaria, Zambales ~ June 2013

After getting off the bus, we walked down the dark alley to Dawal Beach Resort. I knew they’d be open even at this early hour ๐Ÿ™‚ We asked at their reception desk if their restaurant was open, as we were dying for a real breakfast after the long bus ride. Unfortunately, breakfast wouldn’t be served till 6:30am, but hubby did manage to buy coffee at the bar, which was open (though deserted). The restaurant was impressively furnished, and the bar was well-stocked. We were actually contemplating checking in…then we used the restrooms and changed our minds XD Honestly, they should take better care of their restrooms near the restaurant because it’s the first thing would-be guests will see short of checking out the rooms. I’ve seen better restrooms at bus stops, so you get the idea ๐Ÿ˜›

After hubby finished his coffee, we walked out the gate, and walked along the shore. I had read about Sunbloom, and they had the best reviews, but they were a bit expensive for just 2 people. So we walked past them, and several others, looking for Puerto del Mar, which also had good reviews. Only downside is they’re located farther along the beach, instead of clustered near Dawal like all the other resorts. In any case it was a pleasant walk in the early morning ๐Ÿ™‚

At first we walked along the beach, but at a spot where the tide came up and completely covered the beach we had to veer inland, and walked the rest of the way among houses and vacant beachfront lots until…

Gate to Puerto del Mar

Tada! The gate was locked though, so I called the number on the sign and managed to contact Ronald, the manager (09183170478/09324038864) and he asked us to wait for him so he could come open the gate. I was kinda embarrassed because we didn’t have reservations, and he seemed so confused as he kept asking us if we had reserved with someone XD)

After a few minutes, Ronald arrived and unlocked the gate. After I explained that we had only seen their website and had no reservations, he took us around and showed us the available rooms:

Bali Rooms

Bali Lodge (I think)

Thailand Rooms

Native Huts ~ our choice! ๐Ÿ˜€

The Premium Bahay Kubo (in the first pic) is actually the best but it’s rather pricey XD So we chose the *regular* bahay kubo (native hut) instead. However, they were still occupied by 2 families, so Ronald gave us the option of getting another room OR waiting for them to check out ๐Ÿ™‚ He suggested we have breakfast and rest at one of their tables while we wait ๐Ÿ™‚

Tables & grill areas free for guests to use ๐Ÿ™‚ We chose a table near the beach ๐Ÿ™‚

Picnic area for daytrippers

Functional & clean…but we prefer the rustic charm of the tables in the overnight guests’ area ๐Ÿ˜‰

While we were waiting for our breakfast to be cooked (fantasticย Php100 longsilog by the lovely Nanay Flora, who also runs the tiny sari-sari store), Ronald suggested we take a trip to Potipot. According to the boatmen, it was safe for us to be ferried to the island, and they would fetch us in time for our 1pm checkin. Perfect! ๐Ÿ˜€

Here’s our boat:

Vrooom. vroooooom!

Hubby & Baby TP, with Potipot Island in the background (yes, you can actually see it from the resort’s shore!)

  1. Hello po,

What time po kayo nakarating ng Puerto Del Mar? I’m planning to go to Potipot this year and wondering kung saan ako mag che-check in. I read that their check in time is 1PM, yung mga gamit nyo po ba dinala nyo muna nung papunta kayo ng Potipot? Then nung 1PM na you mentioned din na i fe-fetch kayo para makapag check-in na, were you be able to go back to potipot after you checked in at 1PM? Hope you’ll see this comment and reply. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Hi KC! We arrived in Uacon at around 5am, super early pa. We had coffee at Dawal resort, then walked along the beach, so siguro around 6am kami nakarating ng Puerto del Mar. We had to text the numbers on their sign so someone could let us in hehe. The hut we wanted was still occupied, so the caretaker offered us breakfast & trip to Potipot while we waited for 1pm. They offered to keep our bags for us while we went to Potipot, but all our stuff was in the bags & hassle maghalungkat so we brought all our stuff to the island. But you can just leave your bags with the caretaker naman ๐Ÿ™‚

We were actually fetched from the island earlier than 1pm because the waves were really strong (there was a typhoon at the time kasi). So we didn’t go back na to the island after checking in. As far as I know though, the fee for the boat is per roundtrip, so if you want to go to the island more than once, you will have to pay the fee again each time ๐Ÿ™‚

BTW, if you’re with a group, I think the best choice is Sunbloom Resort. We passed it on the way to PDM and it looked really nice, plus I’ve read only positive reviews about them. Mejo pricey lang kasi (for us) since 2 lang kami, but for a group of at least 4pax I think sulit ang Sunbloom ๐Ÿ™‚

      HTH, happy travels! ๐Ÿ™‚
